To join any of the online poker tournaments, one is required to pay the entry fee and the buy-in. Some tournaments like shootout and multi-table tournaments generally have costlier buy-ins than satellite tournaments.
In some cases, the entry fee is waived. Even freeroll tournaments, where one is not required to deposit cash amount to join the tournament, generally require some sort of buy-in. Usually the player is required to have a number of earned bonus points or has a record of winnings in the poker site's real money tournaments.
Online poker tournaments have varied structures. Some of the most tournament structures include multi-table tournaments, single table tournaments or sit-and-go tournaments, shootouts, and satellite tournaments. Irrespective of their individual formats, online poker tournaments all share one underlying principle: the principle of elimination.
As a tournament progresses, every player who runs out of chips are dropped from the game. This is done until only one player remains with all the chips.
In some online poker tournaments, however, re-buy of chips are permitted to players. In certain cases, a player is allowed to have only a fixed number of chip re-buys. In certain cases, there's none. In certain cases, only a player who has ran out of chips is permitted to have a re-buy. In certain cases, any player may purchase chips again. Nonetheless, the principle stays the same: to stay in the tournament, one's stack of chips must never dwindle to none.
Online poker tournaments reward their winners differently. In some, the amount of the award is fixed. In some, the cash award is variable and is dependent on the number of tournament entrants. If there are 20 entrants in a $20 tournament, the $400 pool prize shall be spread out among the winners. If the number of entrants is 40, the pool prize to be divided, then, is $800.
Schedule of some tournaments are held on a daily basis while some are held only once every week.
