The Fundamentals of Bluffing

The moment that you decide to play Poker, you will be immediately faced with the concept of bluffing. Now, in spite of everything that you may have read, the fact is that bluffing in Poker is very important. As a new player, the following are the aspects that you need to be aware of.

The success or failure of bluffing in Poker depends a great deal on what kind of game you are playing. Of course it can be utilized in any variant, but bluffing is more successful, or can be, in some variants compared to others.

For instance, in No Limit Holdem, bluffing is one of the best games to invoke this technique, as it can determine who will actually take down the pot. The reason, of course, is that with the unrestricted betting, one can go all in with or without a strong hand, causing an opponent, particularly a tight one, to fold.

In some games like 7 Card Stud Hi Lo and 5 Card Stud HI Lo, an analysis of the up cards can also be used to determine if bluffing can work. If you have an Ace or a face up card, then you can use this to scare off your opponents.

Bluffing however, does not work as well in Poker variants like Omaha Holdem and Pot Limit Omaha. The reason is that the greater number of hands issued to players signifies that stronger hands are more easily available. For this reason, being called down happens more frequently.

The same can be said of Limit Holdem; the restricted betting, especially in the early rounds, will encourage players to call, making bluffing more difficult to pull off. At the latter rounds wherein the wagers get higher, then you may be more successful in pulling off a bluff.

Bluffing in Poker is something that you do not just attempt out of the blue. You have to consider the way you are playing, whom you are up against, and the game that you are in. Also, your table image cannot be ignored; if you only bet and raise with high hands, then your chances of pulling it off will be stronger, but if you are loose, then it is the exact opposite.

Obviously this entails a lot of work and research on your part, but that is how it should be done. Poker is not easy, and if you want to become good at it, you have to study the matter.

The fact that bluffing in Poker is overly and badly used by a lot of players does not mean that you should discard it. Rather, with the proper techniques and circumstances, you will be able to utilize it as a formidable weapon against unsuspecting opponents.
